5 Eco-Friendly Podcasts to Listen to Right Now!

Do you love plugging in to a podcast during the day? While commuting to work, cleaning the house, or while exercising, what’s better than listening to the playful banter, the debates, and learning something new. If you ask me, it’s an excellent way to keep your mind occupied!

I’m always looking for something new to sink my teeth into – and I’m sure you are too! Which is why I’ve gathered 5 eco-podcasts I hope you’ll love. Whether you’re trying podcasts for the first time or you’re looking for a new favourite, this list has something for you.

Becoming Less

If you receive our monthly newsletter, you’re probably already familiar with Becoming Less (and if you don’t receive our newsletter you should sign up here!). But I have to mention this one again because it’s a great local resource.

This podcast is based in Edmonton, and is part of the non-profit organization, Waste Free Edmonton. The show hosts share their perspective on sustainability and waste in the city and beyond. They provide an entertaining experience that also educates us on what we can do as part of our sustainable journey. My favourite part is the honest, engaging banter. It’s like sitting down and chatting with old friends.

The sustainably.eco podcast

Based in Kingston, Ontario, this podcast discusses a variety of different topics relating to sustainability. Some of the topics covered include: transportation, sustainable energy, living wages, and climate action.

Instead of a conversation, this is hosted interview-style, and the hosts speak to a variety of eco-experts. I love listening to experts on the topic of sustainability. Each episode I walk away with something I can consider, change, or implement in my day-to-day life.

What On EARTH Can We Do?

The Alberta Emerald Foundation, an organization that showcases Alberta’s environmental leaders, created this podcast. They believe that by working together, the big issues facing our society seem much more manageable. Their podcast furthers this by sitting down and speaking with eco-stars to hear their stories and learn how we can implement their work in our own lives.

I love that this podcast combines storytelling with educational content to both encourage and inform. I walk away inspired and excited to forge ahead with new sustainable ideas.

On the Green Fence

As the name suggests, this podcast looks at complicated sustainable issues from multiple perspectives – or from ‘on the fence’. The host takes often over-simplified or complicated ideas and dives deep into the different issues that affect them. For instance, they look into: lab-grown meats, water pollution, allergies, and co-housing.

I especially love the open-minded and questioning approach of this podcast. It’s made me stop and consider my position on some eco-ideas and forced me to look deeper into what we can do to make a difference in becoming a more sustainable world.

Verge Permaculture YouTube Channel

I’ve gone a little off the podcast track with this one – but hear me out! This YouTube channel is an incredible resource out of Calgary that shares new and exciting technology and other permaculture resources.

If you’re wondering ‘What is permaculture?’ (and so was I to start): Permaculture is an approach to land management and settlement design that adopts arrangements observed in flourishing natural ecosystems. It includes a set of design principles derived using whole-systems thinking. It applies these principles in fields such as regenerative agriculture, town planning, rewilding, and community resilience. Basically, it’s a way for us to live holistically with nature which also means avoiding waste.

BONUS

Mother Earth News Podcast

This one’s a bonus for the farmers or those interested in farming. Mother Earth News has been dedicated to conserving our earth’s resources for over 50 years. And now they’re sharing their wealth of knowledge through their podcast.

The podcast focuses predominantly on farming and growing tips. While they are focused on larger farms, some of these tips are great if you’re like me and you just have a small garden in your yard. There’s also a sprinkling of other green topics such as holistic dental care, craft distilling, natural skin care, and green transit.

Disclaimer: I in no way vouch for the accuracy of information in these podcasts. As with all media, I encourage you to be discerning - podcasts especially share people’s perspectives from their knowledge and/or experience which can be bias or mistaken.

For the podcast lovers, the knowledge seekers, and the life-long-learners; I hope you’ve found something new to sink your teeth into. Do you have another environmental podcast you love? Share it in the comments!
