Father’s Day Gift Guide

Father's Day is this month and I don't think I'm the only one who thinks dads are the hardest to buy for. Possibly because they're happy to receive socks and a tie for the tenth year in a row, perhaps because they hardly express need, but probably because if they want anything they just purchase it themselves.

If you’re struggling to find the perfect gift this Father’s Day (like I so often do), I’m here to help! I've put together a gift guide for any dad with more environmentally friendly and natural options. So without further ado, here is my gift guide for dads this Father’s Day:

The Standard Dad

So many dads are no frills people. They appreciate the basics that can be used in their day-to-day lives:

  • Socks and Ties – Something dad is sure to use. Try to source local ones made from sustainable materials! Mr. Nice Socks is an Edmonton company that donates 2 pairs of socks to a local homeless shelter for every MNS pair purchased.

  • Belts – The perfect everyday item. Bonus points for supporting Unbelts (a local Edmonton social enterprise).

  • Metal tie clip or cuff links – This may seem a little fancy, but it’s perfect for when dad wants to dress up.

  • Razors – Every dad needs a quality razor so why not gift him a  safety razor for the closest possible shave?

The Fancy Dad

Some dads love that little bit of extra pampering, so spoil him with these products:

  • Skin care – Spoil dad with some soothing skin products like these ones from Edmonton company Adewunmi.

  • Shave products – Shaving can be a full experience with these shave products from Like Grandpa.

  • Bow ties and accessories – Check out some locally made bow ties & small batch men’s accessories like these from Adesso Man to give your dad that little extra.

The Adventure Dad

Help your dad get outside and enjoy his next adventure with:

  • A Backpack – Pick up a sustainable backpack made from recycled materials for his next hiking trip or vacation

  • Camping Cutlery – Grab some reusable cutlery (metal or bamboo). This is perfect for camping trips in the great outdoors.

  • Toothpaste tablets – Again, great for camping! (For when he finally runs out of the apocalypse-proof stash or travel tubes)

  • Sunscreen – Get him a good sunscreen for those hours outdoors. Check out this great natural sunscreen (or maybe grab some aloe for when dad inevitably forgets to use it).

The Green Thumb Dad

If your dad is a dedicated gardener give him the tools to cultivate and grow his garden:

  • Seeds – Help dad get planting by gifting him some organic seeds or a plant from a local greenhouse

  • Planters – Buy him a planter like these from Greyshed planter to help grow his houseplant collection.

  • Garden Tools – Head out and find some sustainable garden tools (think plastic-free!)

The Bookworm Dad

Help dad find his new favourite read with these gifts:

  • Books – Carefully select a good book from a local bookshop or second hand store that your dad will love.

  • E-books – Get your dad a subscription to an e-book app or to your local library so dad can enjoy a selection of books year round.

The Quality Time Dad

No matter your dad’s interests he’s sure to love spending time with the people he loves.

  • Restaurant Gift Card – Pick up a gift card or take dad out to his favourite local restaurant (remember, supporting local is sustainable!)

  • Experiences – Go to the zoo, check out a local art installation, go on a bike ride, or have a backyard fire - find something your dad loves and spend that quality time with him. Remember, sharing an experience with dad can be just as meaningful as a physical gift.

Whether you’re together or apart this Father’s Day, a great dad deserves a great day. Help make your dad’s day special with a thoughtful, sustainable gift.
